Are Flame Retardants Putting Our Health at Risk?

Chemical flame retardants have made their way into a very long list of mundane everyday household objects. This was no doubt originally intended to help save lives, which it has done. Unfortunately a string of studies published over the past few decades have shown that flame retardants may also be putting our health at risk in other ways.

There has been growing concern about the long term side-effects of Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, in particular. PBDEs are a family of closely related chemicals that have been a popular form of flame retardant since the late 1970s. They are commonly found in a number of everyday consumer products ranging from computers and home theater components, to clothing, and even the stuffing in your mattress.

Whenever your PC or home stereo heats up due to normal use, its plastic casing releases a small amount of PBDE into the air. Like many toxins, exposure to PDBEs doesn’t normally trigger an acute response from the body, but it can have a serious cumulative effect. As concentrations build up in the body, there is an increased risk of permanent nervous and reproductive system damage.

Gulf Oil Dispersants Now Being Found in Seafood

A lab hired by the United Commercial Fishermen's Association analyzed coastal fishing waters. The results indicate that the U.S. government's claim that Gulf of Mexico seafood is safe to eat may be premature.

The lab found dispersant in a sample taken near Biloxi, Missouri, almost a month after BP said it had stopped using the toxic chemical to break up crude oil from the Gulf spill.

New Research: Soy Formula Affects Reproductive Development in Mice

by Dr. Edward Group

You might already know that I’m not a big fan of certain non-fermented soy products. The results of a newly published study on the effects of soy formula on the reproductive systems of mice only underscores how bad they can be for the body.

In this particular study, newborn mice were fed soy formula mixed with a plant derived isoflavone called genistein. Isoflavones occur naturally in a number of legumes, including soy beans. And while many types of isoflavones are rich in antioxidants and other healthful compounds, genistein specifically, has been connected to a wide range of serious health concerns such as cancer and, as this article points out, reproductive abnormalities.
Placebo Effect in Homeopathy

A new study was done to see if the placebo effect is greater in homeopathy than conventional medicines. Researchers went through literature to match homeopathy trials to conventional trials. These trials matched classical homeopathy trials. In classical homeopathy trials, each remedy is individualized for each person and condition.

Some matches had to be excluded for the data because insufficient amount of data. Other matches were excluded because there was not a sufficient match on the conventional side to compare against. Similar criteria was evaluated for each trial. 25 trials were evaluated. 13 trials showed the placebo effect in homeopathy to be more than conventional medicines. 12 trials showed the placebo effect in conventional medicines to be greater than homeopathy. The researchers found that the placebo effect in homeopathy is no greater than in conventional medicines.

Children Who Eat Vended Snack Foods More Likely to Develop Poor Diet

According to research, school children who consume foods purchased in vending machines are more likely to develop poor diet quality – and that may be associated with being overweight, obese or at risk for chronic health problems such as diabetes and coronary artery disease.

The study also looked at foods sold in school stores, snack bars and other related sales that compete with USDA lunch program offerings and found that these pose the same health and diet risks in school-aged children.

"The foods that children are exposed to early on in life influence the pattern for their eating habits as adults," says lead study author Madhuri Kakarala.
Evidence-based vaccinations: A scientific look at the missing science behind flu season vaccines
(NaturalNews)Conventional medicine, they say, is really "Evidence-Based Medicine" (EBM). That is, everything promoted by conventional medicine is supposed to be based on "rigorous scientific scrutiny." It's all supposed to be statistically validated and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it works as advertised. And in the case of flu vaccines, they are advertised as providing some sort of absolute protection against influenza. "Don't miss work this flu season. Get a flu shot!" The idea, of course, is that getting a flu shot offers 100% protection from the flu. If you get a shot, they say, you won't miss work from sickness.

This implication is wildly inaccurate. In fact, it's just flat-out false. As you'll see below, it's false advertising wrapped around junk science.

You see, there was never an independent, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study proving either the safety or effectiveness of the H1N1 swine flu vaccines that were heavily pushed last year (and are in fact in this year's flu shot cocktail). No such study has ever been done. As a result, there is no rigorous scientific basis from which to sell such vaccines in the first place.

Ben & Jerry's gets all their milk from dairies that have pledged not to inject their cows with the Monsanto-developed genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH). Why, then, can't Haagen Dazs, Breyers and Baskin-Robbins do the same?

The three ice cream continue to use milk from cows injected with rBGH, a hormone that's been banned in Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Australia and all 27 nations of the European Union. Meanwhile, Haagen Dazs and Breyers have the audacity to call their ice cream "All Natural."

(NaturalNews) "Endocrine disrupting" chemicals that mimic or interfere with the body's natural sex hormones are partially responsible for early puberty in girls, according to a study conducted by researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"Research has shown that early pubertal development in girls can have adverse social and medical effects, including cancer and diabetes later in life," researcher Mary Wolff said. "Our research shows a connection between chemicals that girls are exposed to on a daily basis and either delayed or early development."
GMOs in Food: Genetically Modified Food & Our Kid
Strawberries grown from seeds injected with DNA from arctic flounder fish to make them frost resistant. Seeds pumped with suicide genes that yield an infertile harvest so corporations can profit from a patent placed on the plant’s genetic code. Rice injected with traits that make it more nutritious so those in parts of the world where vitamin deficiencies are often fatal have a dependable source of vitamins. Wheat injected with bacteria that renders its grain resistant to pesticides and insecticides. Cows injected with artificial sex hormones so they produce more milk.

It’s the existence of these genetically modified organisms (GMOs)—some on the market, some not—that make Sarah Rogan, mother of three, visibly shaken and uneasy at the mere thought of her children eating fast food or school lunch, whether it’s green beans or pizza.

(NaturalNews) Researchers from Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington recently conducted a study on the effects of praying directly with someone for healing. According to Candy Gunther Brown, an associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies at IU and author of the study, "proximal intercessory prayer", as she calls it, can actually help to bring about healing.

Published in the Southern Medical Journal, the study is part of a larger research project investigating the power of spiritual healing practices to heal disease. For this particular study, Brown and her team investigated two charismatic Christian groups known for their healing prayer activities, one from Africa and one from South America.

The team measured the hearing and vision capabilities of impaired people both before and after they received proximal intercessory prayer, and discovered a "statistically significant" improvement in many of them after they had received prayer.
In response to reports that the ingredients may pose health risks, McDonald's China claims that additives in its chicken McNuggets are "harmless". They said that the use of tertiary butylhydroquinone meets Chinese food safety standards. However, "the chemical is toxic to some extent," according to Liu Qingchun, a nutritionist at the General Hospital of Armed Police Forces.

Alarming new scientific evidence shows that artificial colors found in thousands of foods may pose a risk of cancer, hyperactivity and allergic reactions.

The research, conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), calls for common food colors to be banned. CSPI said the colors were contaminated with known carcinogens and shown to cause cancer in rats.

Are You Slowly Killing Your Family with Hidden Dioxane in Your Laundry Detergent?

When most people think of pollution, they think of the outdoors -- garbage-choked streams or industrial waste. But you probably spend a large portion of your time indoors -- as much as 80 to 90 percent of your life. You work, study, eat, drink and sleep in enclosed environments where air circulation may be restricted.

The typical American home contains 3-10 GALLONS of toxic materials -- everything from glass and bathroom cleaners to garden pesticides and fertilizers.

Health effects of ingredients in common household products include:

Respiratory problems

Eye irritation

Cancer

Disruption of the endocrine system

As a result of cleaners and other toxic household products, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the air inside the typical home is 2-5 times more polluted than the air immediately outside -- and in extreme cases, 100 times more contaminated.
More than 85 percent of children's drinks contain so much lead they may exceed federal limits for young children.

Both organic and conventional juices were included in the lead-tainted products. Of 146 products, 125 were contaminated with enough lead in a single serving to require a warning label under California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act.

More and more girls are reaching puberty before the age of 10. The phenomenon could be linked to obesity or exposure to chemicals in the food chain. It is putting girls at greater long-term risk of breast cancer.

A study has revealed that breast development now typically starts at an average age of 9 years and 10 months -- an entire year earlier than what a similar study found in 1991.

Children in households with set bedtimes and children who get adequate sleep score higher on a range of developmental assessments.

Results indicate that a regular bedtime was the sleep habit which was the most consistent predictor of positive developmental outcomes at the age of 4. Children whose parents reported having rules about what time their child goes to bed had higher scores for receptive and expressive language, phonological awareness, literacy and early math abilities.

One week of supplementation with Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis may reduce crying time in infants with colic by 74 per cent, compared with less than 40 per cent in the placebo group, says a new study.
After three weeks of supplementation 84 per cent of infants receiving L. reuteri Protectis no longer had colic, compared with only 43 placebo group, according to results presented today at the Annual Meeting of ESPGHAN in Istanbul.
Is Milk From Grass-Fed Cows More Heart Healthy?

Milk may be more heart healthy if it comes from dairy cows grazed on grass instead of on feedlots.

Cows on a diet of fresh grass produce milk with five times as much of an unsaturated fat called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which animal studies have suggested can protect your heart and aid in weight loss.

Now, according to Reuters:

“[Researchers] found, in a study of 4,000 people, that people with the highest concentrations of CLAs -- the top fifth among all participants -- had a 36 percent lower risk of heart attack compared to those with the lowest concentrations.”

Acute attacks of hay fever often respond to homeopathic remedies. Allergies are usually deep-seated problems, and are often best addressed with a constitutional remedy and the guidance of an experienced practitioner. On this article you will find useful homeopathic remedies for hay fever. For example,

Allium cepa: Indications for this remedy include watery eyes and a clear nasal discharge that irritates the upper lip, along with sneezing and a tickling cough. The person usually is thirsty, and feels worse indoors and when rooms are warm, and better in fresh air.

No Silver Lining about BPA in Cans

Today, a report was released revealing new information about the amount of bisphenol-A (BPA) in our food products. Researchers collected 50 food and beverage containers from several states and Ontario, Canada. The cans contained a wide variety of products, and were sent to a laboratory to be tested for BPA levels.

BPA is the ubiquitous chemical that is in hard plastics, can liners, register receipts and baby products and is known to cause health effects including impaired brain and reproductive development in unborn babies, miscarriage in pregnant women, diabetes, obesity and cancer.

BPA was detected in 92% of the canned food samples, and was not predictable by any reasonable means.
Regular Flu Vaccine Actually INCREASES Risk of Swine Flu
In September 2009, news stories reported that researchers in Canada had found an increased risk of pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) influenza in people who had previously been vaccinated against seasonal influenza. In a school outbreak of pH1N1 in spring 2009, people with cough and fever were found to have received prior seasonal flu vaccination more often than those without.
Researchers at Japan’s Jikei University School of Medicine in Tokyo conducted the double blind, fully randomized study during the 2008-2009 winter season. All said, 354 children whom participated in the study were administered 1200 IUs of either vitamin D or placebo for a 3-month period. By the second month of the test, the research team began to notice some initial changes in the experimental group as compared to the control sample.

Conclusion of the study, as published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: “This study suggests that vitamin D3 supplementation during the winter may reduce the incidence of influenza A, especially in specific subgroups of schoolchildren.”

• Strengthen your immune system

• Improve sleeping habits

• Cut the risk of cancers

• Reduce the risks of heart disease

Does Drinking Milk Cause Upper-Respiratory Congestion?

Conventional wisdom states that drinking milk causes an increase in phlegm. Scientists have have generally dismissed the notion, though, since experiments do not seem to bear it out. In one study, researchers noted that even people who were inoculated with the common cold virus did not show any increase in symptoms when they drank milk. But a new report suggests that those earlier studies suffered from a critical flaw: not all milk is the same. Some types of milk contain a protein called beta-CM-7. This protein can stimulate mucus glands in your digestive tract -- and these glands can also found in your respiratory tract. Milk containing the beta-CM-7 protein could therefore very well stimulate phlegm -- particularly in people who suffer from chronic lung conditions. Read the original article on Mercola.com

Continue reading Does Drinking Milk Cause Upper-Respiratory Congestion?

Continue reading Does Drinking Milk Cause Upper-Respiratory Congestion?

The Vaccines That Worry Parents Most

A new study shows that one in four parents believes some vaccines can trigger autism.

The study is based on a survey of more than 1,500 parents that was conducted last year. About 12 percent of parents said they had refused to allow their children to receive a vaccine that a doctor recommended.

Those parents tended to shy away from four vaccines:

Human papillomavirus vaccine, because of concerns about side effects

Vaccine for meningococcal diseases, because of the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome, an immune system disorder

The shot for measles, mumps and rubella, because of potential autism risk

Chickenpox vaccine

Homeopathy and The Memory of Water with Benveniste
Homeopathy is an unfolding of discoveries to explain observable effects we see transpire in patients. Homeopaths observe and utilize these experiences, yet cannot fully explain in using today's scientific model the mechanisms behind its results. Let us keep our minds open to the possibilities.

More evidence and researchers are coming to conclude that there is something special to water. Plain water. It has remained a mystery. Many properties define the laws of nature for all other substances. Spiritually, it is used for many rituals. It is a vital part of keeping us alive.

Some experiments from Dr. Benveniste and Masaru Emoto has shown that water has memory, and that can be the explanation of why homeopathy works.
Study: Chemicals Found in Common Plastics may be “Feminizing” to Boys
Lead researchers from a University of Rochester study presented a disturbing study that found that chemicals in many common household plastics may be altering male hormones in the brains of baby boys. This represents more evidence directly linking chemicals in plastics to harmful effects in humans.

Published recently in the International Journal of Andrology, the report is a clear indication of the dangers of a plastic chemical additive, called phthalates. These additives are commonly added to vinyl flooring, PVC shower curtains and many other every-day products.

Colic is a mysterious, frustrating and exhausting condition for both infants and parents. Months or years spent raising a colicky child are fraught with sleepless nights and nearly endless screaming. You may think it will never end, but here are some colic remedies that may help.

The exact causes of colic in infants is controversial and the condition is thought to be aggravated by a variety of things, including:
* Food allergies (especially to dairy and soy formulas)
* Underdeveloped gastrointestinal tract
* Emotional stress
* General fussiness
* Vaccinations

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its latest assessment of the chemicals people are carrying around in their bodies. The biomonitoring study is the most comprehensive in the world, measuring 212 chemicals in the blood and urine of 8,000 Americans.

The CDC highlighted a few chemicals because they are both widespread -- found in all or most people tested -- and potentially harmful. Here's a look at what they are and how you can try to avoid them:

Continue reading Six Risky Chemicals You're Carrying in your Body

Continue reading Six Risky Chemicals You're Carrying in your Body

Why Skeptics Love to Hate Homeopathy
So why do the skeptics love to hate homeopathy? Perhaps because it is one of the most threatening alternative modalities -- financially, philosophically, and therapeutically. Actually, homeopathy has been a threat to allopathy ever since the 1800s, when German physician Samuel Hahnemann developed the homeopathic system.

What if an expensive drug could be potentized to create billions of effective doses at essentially no cost? It would destroy big pharma entirely. Medicines that cost essentially nothing? Nontoxic ultradiluted medicines that cause fewer side effects? How could the coffers of big pharma be sustained? Forget about the Law of Similars. It’s potentization -- the process of creating effective ultradilutions -- that big pharma is scared of! No wonder Baum and Ernst got the word “potentization” wrong. This one word is the small stone that could take Goliath down.
One in 80 children has celiac disease, but asymptomatic
Gastroenterology Service Children Hospital Dr. Orlando Alassia of our city was involved, along with other health facilities in other provinces-the first multicenter study was conducted in the country on celiac disease, which allowed to obtain data on the prevalence of this pathology in children younger than 16 years.

Of the 2219 samples were included in the study, for children between 3 and 16 years, 430 were contributed by the Alassia. "We did a check on blood samples from patients who entered the operating room, and above this, was analyzed with a determination of transglutaminase. All determinations were centralized in a laboratory in Buenos Aires. Of all the samples yielded the following results: 29 were positive (although 7 patients had previous diagnosis, why did not need to ask bowel biopsy). Of these samples were 22 biopsies in patients. We found a prevalence of 1.26%, ie 1 in 79, with a predominance of females, "said the professional.

And he stressed: "This is a before and after: no country in the determination of prevalence of celiac disease. Data are completely different in Latin America and also in the rest of the world. "
The “clean smell” in your home may be killing you.

Your home and your clothes may have a “clean smell” like lemons or pine. These synthetic fragrances found in laundry and cleaning products including laundry detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets as well as in “air fresheners” emit dozens of different chemicals.

A recent study found that a plug-in air freshener emitted 20 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which included seven compounds regulated as toxic or hazardous under U.S. federal laws yet the label simply lists “fragrance”. Beware of products that list “fragrance” on the label as many terrible chemicals come under this “catch all” word. Most “fragrances” are manufactured from oil and their health effects on humans when inhaled have often never been studied.
Newborn Babies Were NOT Designed to Sleep Alone

According to Dr. Jay Gordon, babies sleeping on a safe surface with sober, nonsmoking parents respond to their parents, and the parents respond to them. The chance of SIDS occurring in this situation are close to zero. Babies in a crib or in a room away from their parents, on the other hand, will breastfeed less and are at greater risk of infections, including life-threatening ones. The medical profession, as it often does, is approaching the entire idea of the family bed backward. A baby in the same bed with his or her parents is surrounded by the best possible surveillance and safety system. It must be the responsibility of the manufacturers and proponents of cribs and separated sleep to prove that such disruption is safe, not the other way around.
Pregnant moms are exposed to toxic chemicals

The Washington Toxics Coalition yesterday released a study which is being called the first of its kind. The project tested nine pregnant women from Washington, Oregon and California for levels of toxic chemicals in their bodies, and thus being exposed to their fetuses. This study was completed in collaboration with Commonweal Biomonitoring Resource Center and the Toxic-Free Legacy Coalition.

The women were tested in their second trimester of pregnancy. Every woman tested was found to have levels of bisphenol A, mercury, phthalates, and perfluorinated -- or "Teflon" -- chemicals in their blood. The chemical levels are alarming because the chemicals tested are known to impair brain development, disrupt hormone levels, cause reproductive issues, and lead to cancer.

The food processing world is reeling right now one day after a shocking new series of tests released by Consumer Reports revealed that many leading brands of canned foods contain Bisphenol A (BPA)—a toxic chemical linked to health risks including reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems. BPA is used in the lining of cans and the toxin leaches from the lining into the food. According to Consumer Reports just a couple of servings of canned food can exceed scientific limits on daily exposure for children.
Thimerosal Law Changed for H1N1 Vaccine

The New York Health Department has decided to change a state law so that more people can receive the H1N1 vaccine more quickly. Since 2008, the New York State Department of Health has not allowed pregnant women and children under three to be given vaccines with Thimerosal in them. Thimerosal is a mercury containing preservative that keeps bacteria out of the vaccine. Because the H1N1 vaccine can be made more quickly with Thimerosal in it, all injectable versions of the shot given out will contain Thimerosal.

Salmon, tuna, and other fish are loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, so they must be good for you, right? Not so fast—some types of fish have more mercury than others, and others are harvested from the ocean or farmed in a way that’s harmful to the environment. Now, a new list has come to the rescue: IIt sorts through the confusion by rating fish in terms of levels of omega-3 fatty acids, mercury and other toxins, and in terms of their sustainability or ocean-friendly status.

Studies have brought out evidence to support the theory of colony collapse disorder (CCD) among honeybees due to bioactive microwave radiation from cell phones and their relay towers. Recent experiments have found that worker bees fail to return to their hives when their navigation skills are interfered by the mobile microwaves. Cell phones were placed near beehives. These hives collapsed totally in 5 to 10 days, with the worker bees failing to return to their homes. The phenomenon of CCD and resultant crop loss were first noticed in the U.S. several years ago, but it had spread to most European countries by 2007. Read the article on Mercola.com

Continue reading Honeybees Face Towering Threat From Cell Phones

Continue reading Honeybees Face Towering Threat From Cell Phones

More than 1 million babies born prematurely die each year before they are a month old, according to the first comprehensive global report on premature births. One way to prevent many of these tragedies from occurring would be increased sun exposure for pregnant women and infants. Powerful new evidence has demonstrated that vitamin D can reduce the risk of premature births and boost the health of newborn babies.
Supposedly 'Safe' Lead Levels Harm Children

Young children's exposure to lead in the environment is harming their intellectual and emotional development. What’s more, the toxic effects of lead on the central nervous system are obvious even below the current so-called safe level of lead in the blood. They are recommending the threshold should be halved. The study set out to see if there was any effect on the behavior and intellectual development of children who had ingested just below the UK’s so-called safe level of 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood. Lead levels between five and 10 micrograms per deciliter were associated with significantly poorer scores for reading ( 49 percent lower) and writing (51 percent lower).
(NaturalNews) Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a malignant disease of the bone marrow, is the most common cancer diagnosed in children. In fact, nearly one third of all pediatric cancers are cases of ALL. Although this form of cancer can be cured in many cases, in the worst case scenarios the cancer crowds out normal cells in the bone marrow, metastasizes to other organs and takes the lives of about 15 percent of the youngsters it attacks. What triggers so many kids, usually between the ages of three and seven, to develop this cancer in the first place? A new study just published in the August issue of the journal Therapeutic Drug Monitoring raises the suspicion that commonly used household pesticides are the cause.

Chlorine kills germs in swimming pools, but it may also contribute to risk for asthma and nasal allergies. Children with allergic sensitivities (atopy) who have spent more time in chlorinated pools have a higher risk of asthma and nasal allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and hay fever, researchers from Belgium report in the Sept. 14 issue of Pediatrics.
GMO Foods Have Failed at Producing Healthy Food for More People

GMOs (genetically modified organisms) have sucked up billions of research dollars and prolonged agriculture's dependence on chemical inputs, but they have yet to justify their role. A recent review of on-farm production levels of genetically modified crops showed less than marginal gains in actual yield. In fact, the review concluded that "no currently available transgenic varieties enhance the intrinsic yield of any crops."

If GMOs are developed to increase yields, then they have failed. If they are marketed to reduce costs for farmers, the price of GMO corn seed is now three times greater than it was just a few years ago. If these seeds are engineered to use less herbicides, many weeds are becoming Roundup-resistant, requiring a cocktail of herbicide applications in certain farming areas. And their safety is still in question.

Tim Ferriss of Four Hour Work Week has posted an exclusive excerpt from Drs. Michael and Mary Eades’ newest book, The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle.

The two doctors note that no matter how the story spins from the denizens of the anti-fat camp, one piece of their advice remains staunchly constant: “You should sharply limit your intake of saturated fats.” But will saturated fats really increase your risk of heart disease and raise your cholesterol? In a word, no. In fact, humans need them, and here are just a few reasons why:
